Florence Labor Day celebration will feature a revitalized soap box derby called “King of the Hill” sponsored by the Labor Day Committee with the support of Wray Roofing in North Newton and the Florence Fire Department.
The race will be a double elimination race down Fifth Street hill in Florence with two classes of cars.
The stock class which participants can ride for free features four cars built by the Florence Labor Day Committee. The race is for children ages 9 to 12 who weigh 120 pounds or less and no taller than 5’3”. All participants need to bring a bicycle helmet. The race will be limited to 30 riders.
The second class will be the open class, which will be for riders who bring their own cars. Double elimination format will be followed. There is no limit on contestants in this class.
The name of the winner of the stock class will be engraved on a trophy to be displayed at the Florence city office. Plus they will receive a trophy to take home along with a Wii game station.
Trophies will be presented to second and third class winners. All participants will receive dog tags engraved with the event’s name and date.
