Soaking up a day at the lake

Painting pumpkins, eating s’mores, paddling canoes, shooting arrows, playing goofy games, fishing, and making crafts were part of a day at the lake Friday for Marion Middle School students.

Activity stations were set up around the lake. Kids walked from one to another. Most power-walked to hurry to the next one.

At a pumpkin painting station, teachers Dani Lange and Jona Neufeld talked to students about what was expected.

“When you’re paining, you need to be creative,” Lange said. “Then we’re going to judge and the team that we judge, the most creative gets two s’mores instead of one.”

Kids gave their gourds time to dry between coats and colors. They then made s’mores, toasting marshmallows over a nearby fire.

At a game station, kids scurried across a remote-control airplane tarmac with balls tucked between their knees and jumped around to make ping pong balls fall out of tissue boxes strapped to their backs.

A lunch of grilled hamburgers, chips, and cookies topped off the fun.

Lake day is an annual event for the middle school.
