Short-term lake rentals endorsed

Staff writer

Three homes at Marion County Park and Lake could be approved for use as short-term rental properties after county commissioners review recommendations for two conditional use permits.

Matt Meyerhoff earlier filed a request that homes at 58 and 59 Lakeshore Dr. be approved as short-term rentals.

He and his sister own those houses.

Elise Harper also applied for a conditional use permit to operate a short-term rental owned by Judy Dyer at 6 Jerome St.

The properties Meyerhoff proposed share a property line with property at 57 Lakeshore Dr. owned by Linda Judd.

At a Planning and Zoning Commission hearing Thursday night, Judd expressed concerns that Meyerhoff erect a fence to prevent renters from being able to see into her bedroom window.

She also was concerned about a large rock on the property line that she thought would be a hazard to children who might want to play on it.

“What are we going to do about the rock?” Meyerhoff asked.

“I don’t know,” she said.

Commission member Derek Belton said the commission could not specify that a privacy fence be installed as part of the approval process, but Meyerhoff was willing to install the fence and consider options regarding the rock.

Commissioners voted to recommend partial approval of Meyerhoff’s request, approving the property for short-term rental and denying a request to install recreational vehicle hookups.

They voted to recommend approval of a conditional use permit for 6 Jerome St.

Both recommendations now will go to the county commission for final action.
