Sheriff’s office gets infusion of deputies

Counting one who began duties Dec. 18, one who started work Friday, and a third who began working today, the sheriff’s office has hired four deputies to bring the sheriff’s office back to full staff after an exodus that began soon after Aug. 11 raids on the Marion County Record and the homes of its owners and Marion’s vice mayor.
The new hires are:
- Peabody native Clayton Philpott, who began working as a deputy Dec. 18. Philpott, son of jailer James Philpott, also is a captain with the Peabody fire department. He worked for Peabody Sausage House from June 2020 to July 2023. This is his first job in law enforcement.
- Jesse Raney, Independence, started working for the sheriff’s office Monday as his first job in law enforcement. He previously worked as a fence crew foreman for Raney Fencing in Coffeyville.
- Former Marion County deputy Landis Goodman is returning today from Wichita to resume working for Marion County. Goodman worked as a deputy here from September 2021 until March 2023 and then spent eight months with Valley Center’s police department.
- Byron McDonald, an officer with Neodesha Police Department from June 2022 until last month, will begin patrolling Marion County roads Monday.
New deputies who have not yet been certified as Kansas law enforcement officers will be required to attend classes at Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center.
