Serving up fellowship along with food

Staff writer

Are you feeling lonely? Are you feeling isolated and in need of companionship?

A good way to fulfill that need as retired citizens is to attend your local senior center.

Hillsboro, Marion, and Peabody provide meals and social interaction five days a week.

Marion has lost some senior citizens and is looking for more. Those who do go there say they look forward to it.

“It’s good eatin’ and good fellowship,” George Schutte said. He and his wife, Sharon, moved to Marion from the Lehigh area several years ago.

Dale Lind, 85, has lived in Marion for three years. He was a church pianist and organ player for more than 70 years. He retired in 1990 as a meat inspector and raised fresh produce for sale for 10 years after that.

He provides musical entertainment for those who attend the center.

“I love it here,” he said. “It gives me a chance to be with people, and I get to share my piano playing.”

Effie Smith has been delivering meals for three years. She lived in the country, so it took her a while to know the people who frequent the center. She moved to Marion in April and eats there regularly.

Director Janet Bryant aims to serve 50 meals a day, including takeout, deliveries, and in-house dining. Average attendance is 15 to 20.

Kathy Bernhardt has been cook for four years. She is assisted alternately by Wilma Nice, Connie Fisher, and Becky Hogue. Her day starts at 7 a.m.

On Thursday, 40 meals were served. The $4 meal included cheesy ham and potato soup, green peas, and mixed fruit.
