School year cut short by two days

Staff writer

Students of Hillsboro school district will get an early to start their summer break, thanks to a unanimous decision of its school board.

The last day of school will be May 21.

Staff will report to work May 24 and 25 for needed professional development days, superintendent Max Heinrichs said.

The decision has nothing to do with an outbreak of 18 positive cases at district’s high school and four at the elementary that erupted in late April after prom.

“By tomorrow, or the next day, there should be zero cases,” he said. “So it’s cleaned up pretty good.”

After a challenging year, district’s staff needs time to learn from it and prepare to tackle the next one.

Teachers at the middle and high school will be reviewing math curriculum and staff will be learning new software.

Heinrichs said he considered pitching the idea to the board in January, but wanted to make sure the district would meet its quota of mandated instruction days.

“We are about three-and-a-half or four days over,” he said.
