Former Marion resident and U.S. Army Pfc. Ryan Grady, 25, of West Burke, Vt., was killed Friday when his patrol vehicle struck a roadside bomb outside Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. Four others were seriously wounded.

The Grady family — James and Debbie, along with sons James, Kevin, and Ryan — lived in Marion until the late 1990s, with Ryan being born in Marion in 1985.

According to published reports, the Vermont National Guardsman served with Company A Special Troops Battalion, headquartered in Bradford, Vt.

Grady joined the Army in 2003 and spent nearly a year in Iraq in 2005 and 2006. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries he sustained while serving in Iraq. He joined the Vermont National Guard after returning from Iraq in 2006.

Grady was promoted posthumously to the rank of specialist.

Grady’s brother, Kevin, 27, also a Vermont National Guardsman, had been deployed to Afghanistan and was stationed at Bagram Airfield when his brother was killed. The brothers ate breakfast together hours before Ryan Grady’s death.

Survivors include his wife, Heaven, and 6-year-old daughter, Alexis; father, James, of West Burke; mother, Debbie Hudacek, of Bristow, Okla.; and brothers James of Muskogee, Okla., and Kevin of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and an aunt, Diane Carpenter, of rural Marion.
