Ludwigs celebrate 60 years with family cruise

Staff writer

Ronald and Kathleen Ludwig had their breath taken away when they found their room.

“Happy anniversary,” read the door decal, with Mickey and Minnie Mouse smiling back at them. Inside their room was a bouquet of flowers.

“We felt like royalty,” Kathleen said. “It was the closest we’ll ever get, anyway.”

After 60 years together, the couple was taking its first cruise vacation — a weeklong Bahamian voyage aboard the Disney Dream. The cruise left June 14 and returned June 20. They weren’t able to time it with the actual date of their 60th anniversary, which was June 25.

Kathleen Ludwig said it was nice because they were able to bring the whole family.

“There was 16 of us, and that’s our entire family,” she said. “We just had a ball.”

Kathleen and Ronald brought their four children, Tawnya Sokoll, Rolana Heidebrecht, Douglas Ludwig, and Dan Ludwig. Sokoll and Heidebrecht brought their husbands, Steve and Scott, respectively. The Sokolls brought two daughters, Corinn and Jenna, and the Heidebrechts brought five sons, Tyson, Justin, Taylor, Peyton, and Evann. Tyson brought his wife, Jessica.

It was the first time any of them had been on a cruise.

“It meant everything to us,” Kathleen said. “We’re very much a family oriented group. We get together every Thanksgiving and every Christmas — all of us.”

The ship was massive.

“Way longer than a football field, I’ll tell you that,” Kathleen said.

Nearly four times longer, actually. According to Disney’s website, the ship is 1,115 feet long and 125 feet across.

“You didn’t even know it was moving,” Kathleen said. “The enormity of the ship amazed me.”

The cruise made stops in the Bahamas and at Castaway Cay, a private island owned by Disney exclusively for its cruise patrons.

One of the brightest highlights of the trip, Kathleen said, was watching family members swim with dolphins.

“You don’t know what to expect, but they actually swam with the dolphins,” Kathleen said. “Of course, those dolphins are trained. There’s a trainer telling them what to do and so on. We got videos of that. It’s really something to see.”

The cruise was all-inclusive, meaning the meals and amenities were pre-paid, Kathleen said.

“I asked them if they were trying to kill the passengers with how much food they offered us,” she said. “I’m a home economist. I’ve never eaten so much food that was served to us like that.”

She said each day of the cruise ended with a theater presentation of a Disney movie.

It was, for the Ludwigs, a dream come true.

“It’s an experience we’ll probably never do again,” she said. “But some of our children said, ‘Oh, we’ll probably do that again.’”

Rita Kraus

Rita Catherine (Friess) Kraus was born Sept. 30, 1923, on a farm near St. Mark’s, Kansas. She was the second of 10 children born to John and Gudula (Thome) Friess.

She received her education at St. Mark’s Catholic School. After graduation, she hired out to help in the homes of area families following the births of their new babies. Later, she worked at Wichita Hospital prior to her marriage.

On Aug. 3, 1943, while attending as maid of honor for her older sister’s wedding, she caught the eye of Raymond Kraus at the wedding dance; he asked her for a dance and she accepted. That was the beginning of 64 years of dancing together. They loved and enjoyed their dancing and were very active members of the Midwestern Polka Club, including reigning as king and queen for one year. Over the years, they met and established many friendships that lasted their entire lives. Their last dance together occurred two days before her beloved Raymond passed away.

Rita and Raymond were married May 22, 1946, in St. Mark’s, Kansas. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2006. The young married couple lived on the Kraus family farm near Wichita. Here, two children, Alice and Don, were born.

In August 1951, they purchased the former Sunset Stock Farm northeast of Marion. They remained on this land for 54 years, and four additional children were born: Dennis, Paul, Leroy, and Lori. Rita was a great helpmate to Raymond as he managed the farming. One of the things she enjoyed in those earlier years was creating beautiful embroidery work. She returned to that hobby in her later years.

Rita always found joy and pride in her gardening and cooking. She cooked many delicious meals. She definitely had her specialties, which included her pies, cakes, and her wonderful baked breads, including coconut twists and kolaches.

In 2005, Rita and Raymond retired from the farm and moved to Marion. Rita was an active member of Holy Family Parish since they moved to Marion in 1951. Her religion was always extremely important to her, as evidenced by her daily prayer life. She served her Lord in many ways, but very important and enjoyable to her was serving as chairman of St. Mark’s Altar Society funeral dinner committee for 27 years, ending in 2010. She had previously served as president of the Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 2007, and her son, Don, in 2012.

She is survived by her sons Dennis and Paul, both of Wichita, and Leroy of Marion; her daughters Alice Trego of Muscatine, Iowa, and Lori Siebert of Marion; four siblings; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Holy Family Parish, St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Marion, with the Rosary on Monday evening and Funeral Mass on Tuesday morning, June 30, 2015.

Memorial funds are established for the Father Kapaun Legacy Fund or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm St., Marion, KS 66861. Condolences to www.zeinerfuneralhomes.com.

Norma Jane Unger

Norma Jane Unger was embraced by the arms of Jesus on June 18, 2015. She was born in Hillsboro, Kansas, Sept. 28, 1928.

She is survived by her three beloved children, Teresa Ann Derr, Sharon Kay Huckelberry and her husband, Bert, Kenneth Bradley Unger and partner, Stephen Logue; and her sister, Joyce Ann May. She adored her grandchildren, Jonathan (Leslie), Jennifer, Wendy, Angela, and Phil (Michelle). She was proud to be great-grandmother to Jonathan, Jayson, Leah, Jacob, Nathaniel, Odessa, Alexander, Tyler, Dylan, and baby Evariste. Her nieces and nephews will remember their fun-loving Aunt Norma.

Norma lived a vibrant life. She created a loving home wherever God placed her. She was a woman of many talents. Her favorite activity was cooking delicious meals and treats for loved ones. She was an accomplished seamstress, a spotless homemaker, and gracious hostess. Her God-given beauty was only surpassed by her inner beauty.

She survived many transitions in her life of 86 years with strength, courage, dignity, and faith. She loved to laugh, and cherished the laughter of her loved ones. She has touched many lives and her Light will continue to shine brightly in those who knew her.

She was a member of Mountain City United Methodist Church.
