Riggs family meets for reunion

The 80th annual J.D. and Lucinda Riggs family reunion was held July 26-27 at the Burns Community Center, Burns. Ninety-seven family members and friends attended.

A group picture was taken July 27, followed by the invocation by Calvin Schmidt and a basket dinner.

President Dianne Dewey called the business meeting to order. Each family member introduced themselves and spouses.

First time attendees were Louis, Stephanie, and Christi Gutierrez, Kelly and Ally Martin, Leesha and Dylan Tanner, and Seth Hutto.

Minutes from the previous reunion were read and approved.

Committee reports were given. Annette Wrigley told about a wall-hanging she had made with an emphasis on the Riggs’ history.

Patty Delmont reported on the Riggs’ website.

Esther Henderson apologized for leaving some recipes out of the family cookbook. She recognized those who helped put the books together, Corky Dewey, Carl Cox, and Lela Heacock.

Reta Cox reported on the Parma, Idaho, Riggs reunion June 1. There were 46 members present from Arizona, Arkansas, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Texas. She also reported on the surprise 90th birthday celebration July 19 for Mrs. Earl Riggs at Odessa, Texas. Thirty-one family members attended.

Lyle Riggs read a letter from his mother to the group at the Burns reunion.

A treasurer’s report was given and approved.

It was decided to retain the current slate of officers.

Loren Cox of Newton was recognized for being the oldest person in attendance. He is 91. The youngest member was eight-month-old Ally Martin, daughter of Michael and Kelly Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Martin of Bend, Ore., were recognized for coming the farthest distance.
