HOPE IN THE HEARTLAND:   Read any good books lately?

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

The impact of a well-told story lingers in your soul and mind. Chances are many of us were first introduced to basic truths of scripture through stories told by Sunday school teachers or parents. And, the fact is, we never outgrow our interest in story. That’s why preachers use illustrations to highlight a point in their sermons. They know that a fitting illustration throws light on the point they’re trying to make, which makes it easier for the hearers to “get the point”. Good stories connect with both sides of our brains.

The way in which a truth is presented can make all the difference in the world. Jesus understood that better than anyone else. He told stories about lost sheep, lost coins, a run-away son, seed, and soil. He used these earthly stories to reveal heavenly truths.

Christian writers try to do the same thing. They tell “earthly” stories about the struggles of living on a sinful planet. But they also show how God’s truth, hope, love, and power can shine light into that darkness. If you haven’t picked up a Christian novel in a while, I encourage you to do so.
