Ramona’s party ‘only in America’

Ramona’s Independence Day celebration Saturday offered plenty of activities all day, but Herington resident Nick Gonzalez said he enjoyed relaxing in the shade of Ramona’s post office.
“I don’t like to be in the sun,” he said. “We sat over by the bank for three or four years, but there wasn’t any shade.”
Gonzalez, a Lost Springs native, has been attending Independence Day festivities in Ramona for 8 or 9 years.
Gonzalez’s ties to Ramona run far deeper, though, as far as the late 1950s.
“In ’58 right after I got out of the military, I played with the softball team here,” he said. “I like this little town.”
Gonzalez said staying involved with his community is important, and he still feels ties to both Herington and Marion County where he grew up.
“I’m a veteran, and I need to get out and do something,” he said. “That’s why I’ve done a lot of things in Herington.”
He didn’t stay for the evening’s fireworks, but he still appreciated everything the day had to offer.
“Look at all these people,” he said. “You can only do this in America. They’re having a good time.”
Activities ranged from lawn art and mud volleyball in the park, to watermelon- and pie-eating contests downtown, before the event capped off with fireworks.
