Youngsters who get to Peabody-Burns Elementary School too early in the morning may be stuck waiting at the door for up to half an hour before they can get inside, USD #398 school board members heard at the Dec. 14 board meeting.
“It is nice to know the kids are enthusiastic about getting here and starting their day, but for the past few weeks it has been pretty brisk at that hour of the morning and they really should not be arriving that early.” Peabody-Burns Superintendent and Elementary School Principal Ron Traxson said.
“The kids start arriving about 7 a.m. or 10 after or so, and we really don’t have any staff here to open the doors and then supervise them once they are in the building,” he said. “They are allowed in at about 7:30 a.m. when the teachers and staff members start coming in.”
Traxson said he had received some comments from community members who have noticed students outside and said he would be contacting parents to remind them not to allow their children to head for school so early.
He acknowledged that it had not caused any problems, but with winter approaching, a reminder needs to go home to parents.
In other business, the district donated an unused electronic message board that used to hang in the main hall to the residents of Indian Guide Terrace.
