Positivity a big difference
for living center resident

Staff writer

Lois Winter moved to St. Luke Living Center in mid-January, but it didn’t take the Marion resident long to start spreading her brand of positivity among her neighbors.

Part of that attitude was forged by keeping herself mentally stimulated.

“If you don’t keep your mind going, you’re going to lose it,” she said. “You either use it or lose it, no matter if it’s your brain, muscles, or whatever you’re doing.”

Whether reading books or on the Internet, Winter said she enjoys finding educational material to keep her busy.

“That’s what I like to do,” she said. “I like to read about your body, health, and that sort of thing.”

Even when the living center faced a lockdown as a preventative measure against COVID-19, Winter said it had a minimal effect on her.

“It hasn’t bothered me at all,” she said. “It could have bothered me if I really wanted it to, but I think more on the positive side.”

A large part of the matter is being able to stay physically active, as Winter said she walks a mile every day, whether inside the building or around the living center’s courtyard.

Winter also works to keep her diet balanced, receiving ground up fruits and vegetables from staff with her meals. She said her vital signs reflect her dietary decisions, and are even sometimes better than those giving her tests.

“I kind of cheat on the side, you might say,” she said. “I do take supplements.”
