Police give reminders to cyclists, ATV users

“Bicycle riders in Peabody are reminded that reflectors or reflective tape are helpful to people who ride in the dark,” Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke said. “Cyclists also are required by law to have a working headlight and working taillight.”

Burke said the rule applied to bike riders of any age on bicycles of any style.

“No matter how young or old you are, no matter if it’s a mountain bike or older 3-speed, the bicycle needs to have a headlight and taillight.”

Burke also noted that ATV operators who are 18 or older do not need to wear a helmet when driving.

“Everyone at the controls of an ATV needs to have on protective eyewear,” he said, “that can be goggles or safety glasses. Regular eyeglasses or sunglasses also fit the bill. The eyes need to be protected.”

Citizens with questions about bicycle safety or rules for alternate forms of transportation should contact Burke or any other officer at 983-2133.
