Pickens 6th in 400 at Kansas Relays

Staff writer

Peabody-Burns High School senior Lauren Pickens ran in the 100- and 400-meter dashes Friday and Saturday at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence.

She qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.94 seconds in preliminary competition, the second best qualifying time. In the finals, she finished sixth with a time of 58.47.

“Lauren was off to a great start in the 400 finals, leading after 200 meters,” PBHS track coach Brian Lightner said. “But with 150 meters left, she felt her hamstring tighten up. She pulled up a little and it cost her the race. It was a great competition for her and this is the earliest in the season she has broken the 57-second barrier.”

She placed tenth in preliminary competition in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.61 seconds.
