Peabody grad honored at Texas Tech

Ethan Schmidt was one of 13 faculty members who received the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award April 19 during the annual Faculty Honors Convocation at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

Recipients of the award are nominated by faculty within their department, reviewed by the deans and provost, and then approved by the president of the university.

Schmidt is a member of the Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at TTU.

When presenting Schmidt with his award, Provost Bob Smith noted that students and fellow faculty members admire Schmidt.

“Professor Schmidt is noted as a teacher who sets high standards for his students,” Smith said. “But he maintains a dedication to assisting students attain those standards.”

A former student told Smith, “I tremendously enjoyed the classes I took with Dr. Schmidt; he could really spin a story, which always had me spellbound — completely absorbed in what he was saying.”

Schmidt is a 1994 graduate of Peabody High School. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Emporia State University and his doctorate at the University of Kansas.
