The south rose again this week in volleyball with the county’s two southernmost teams enjoying the most success
Peabody-Burns
The Warriors finished 2-0 against St. Xavier and Newton HomeSchool Monday night on the road.
Peabody-Burns went three sets against Newton before sweeping St. Xavier in two.
Adyson Winter led the team with 17 kills between both matches.
“These girls have really made some progress throughout the season, and I can’t wait to see what their future seasons look like,” coach Clarissa Dutton said.
The Warriors’ last games of the regular season will take place Saturday at Canton-Galva.
Goessel
On Saturday, Goessel played in a pool with 3A power Halstead.
Goessel and Halstead each defeated Solomon and Marion before facing each other.
In tight sets, the Bluebirds eventually fell, 25-23, 25-22.
Finishing second in their pool earned Goessel the right to face off against the #1 ranked team in class 2A, Inman.
The Teutons scored nine consecutive points in the second set to take a commanding 15-6 lead and won by a final score of 25-12.
In the consolation match for third place, Goessel faced class 1A’s #1 team, Little River.
The taller Little River team blocked several Bluebird hits, and eventually took the first set 25-15.
The second set was close all the way. Goessel trailed 21-22 when Brooklyn Wuest got a kill to tie the game.
Little River scored another point on a block before Abbigail Funk served an ace to take the lead. A good pass to setter Aimee Funk allowed for a perfect set to Delaney Duerksen for the kill, allowing Goessel to snatch the second set 25-23.
Errors in the third set doomed the Bluebirds’ chances as Little River went from a 13-10 deficit to win by a score of 25-19.
Goessel is now 23-5 and will play matches on Tuesday.
