Peabody, Florence can join 'U.S. 50 Yard Sale'

For the 11th year, a garage sale will take place along U.S. 50 highway from Washington D.C. west to the California coast. The dates for the 2010 “Great U. S. 50 Yard Sale” are May 21 to 23.

Tom Taylor of North Vernon, Ind., is the national coordinator of the event.

“The sale started as a way for individuals and organizations to make money,” Taylor said. “I am aware of several local civic groups across the nation that use this promotion as their major annual fundraiser.”

The “Great U.S. 50 Yard Sale” has been featured on the Public Broadcasting Service and in numerous newspapers and magazines.

Taylor sees the weekend as a great chance to promote tourism in a community or region along U.S. 50, provide fundraising opportunities for civic organizations, aid the environment through recycling, and create a great weekend of garage sales for people who enjoy them.

There is no charge to participate, but sellers are urged to check local ordinances before setting up a sale location. Taylor notes that some communities set up formal locations for the sale while others allow individuals or organizations to make their own arrangements.

Taylor also encourages merchants in communities that plan to participate to hang signs in their businesses advertising the event. Taylor maintains an Internet site that anyone can access to download and print fliers to pass out.

Taylor’s official website lists Dan and Amanda Bader of Park City as the county coordinator for Harvey and Marion counties. They can be reached at (316)-201-6951, dbader@cox.net, or meadowlarktrader@cox.net.
