Two points was the gap between victory and defeat for the Peabody-Burns Junior High School Junior Warriors. They lost to Rural Vista, 44-42, at home Thursday. The squad will travel next to Little River and finish the season at Centre.
PBJHS scored first, the series ended with a Clayton Philpott 10-yard run for the score. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, but the Junior Warriors had the lead with 2 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Junior Warriors’ defense forced the Rural Vista team to turn the ball over on downs and PBJHS added another score. Philpott again ran for a 10-yard score. Philpott connected with Ezequiel Trevino for the extra points. With 7:17 left in the second, PBJHS took the lead, 14-0.
The next points of the contest went to Rural Vista. With 4:25 left in the second, PBJHS led, 14-6.
Philpott again found the endzone in the second quarter. His 45-yard run put the Junior Warriors on top, 20-6, at halftime.
Rural Vista added the first points in the second half. They added a touchdown and a conversion to make the score 20-14 with 7:30 left in the quarter.
Rural Vista took their first lead in the competition in the third period. A touchdown tied the score and the conversion gave the team the lead over the Junior Warriors, 22-20, with1:18 on the clock.
Philpott again scored for the PBJHS squad with a 27-yard run. He also added the 2-point conversion. PBJHS regained the lead, 28-22, with 1 minute left in the third quarter.
Rural Vista added 6 points. The contest was tied at 28 with five minutes left to play.
The lead again favored the Junior Warriors when Philpott scored on a 40-yard run with 4:52 left in the game. Philpott added 2 on the conversion. PBJHS led, 36-28.
Again, Rural Vista answered with 8 points and tied the game at 36.
With 17 seconds left in the game, Philpott scored on a 22-yard run. The conversion however failed and the gap was 6, 42-36.
A long pass play and conversion iced the game for the opponent. Rural Vista defeated the Junior Warriors, 44-42.
