Peabody-Burns girls' season ends before substate opener

Peabody-Burns Lady Warrior basketball 2014 is in the history books with two losses that ended the regular season and also substate play.

The team lost Feb. 25 at home to Centre 61-23. In a Saturday substate play-in game at Canton-Galva, the PBHS squad finished the season with a 51-33 defeat. The team ended the season with a 0-7 record in Wheat State league play and 2-19 overall.

Centre

Both offenses had a good first quarter. Centre had a 19-12 edge at the buzzer. Brianna Larsen led the team with four points. Christa Elliott had a trey and Rylie McDowell had a two-point basket and a free throw. Jordan Gibson got on the board with two.

Centre offense caught fire in the second, scoring 23 points. PBHS offense went cold and only added two from Katy Benson and a free throw from McDowell before halftime. PBHS trailed 42-15.

One free throw from Gibson made for a long third quarter for the Lady Warriors. The gap was 57-16 after three quarters.

With a running clock, PBHS finished with 7 points in the fourth. Benson had a trey. Elliott and Gibson each added two. Centre capped off the night with four more in the period. PBHS lost 61-23.

Canton-Galva

Canton-Galva’s perimeter offense was on fire in the first quarter. Twelve of its 19 points came from beyond the arc. PBHS scored six in the period, including four from the line. Gibson had a two-point basket and two free throws. Elliott had two from the line. Canton-Galva led PBHS 19-6 at the end of the period.

Defensively, both teams had good pressure, but whistles interrupted a good scoring quarter for the PBHS squad. Elliott drained two treys to lead with six. Larsen was perfect from the line with four. Gibson had 4 points, a 2-point basket and two from the line. PBHS closed the gap to six with three minutes left in the quarter, but the deficit was eight at the half, 28-20.

Foul trouble dictated a less aggressive defense for the Lady Warriors in the third. Canton-Galva put up 16 for the period. PBHS had only seven. Larsen had five and Benson added two. The Lady Warriors were down 44-27 at the end of three.

Larsen added four in the final quarter. Elliott capped off her game with two. Canton-Galva added seven and defeated PBHS 51-33.
