Peabody-Burns girls get 1 tournament win

The Peabody girls’ 2013 basketball season ended Friday in the second round of sub-state play at Moundridge. A Thursday first-round, overtime, 47-46, victory over Herington setup Friday the second round contest against Moundridge. PBHS lost to the Wildcats, 49-16. The Lady Warriors finish the season with a 10-12 record overall.

Herington

Rayna Barnes opened the contest with the first four points of the game. Herington came back to hit two 3-pointers and take the 6-4 lead with 6 minutes on the clock. A Paige Lewis trey gave the PBHS squad a one-point edge, but Herington came back with a basket.

Barnes flipped the lead again with a 2-pointer and Brianna Larsen added two. PBHS led, 11-8, with 4:20 left in the first quarter. Herington tied the score with the addition of a free throw and a 2-point basket. Brandee Burnett got on the board with a two and Barnes added two. The Warriors were up, 15-11, at the end of the first quarter.

Herington had the first two points in the second period to close the score to 15-13. Burnett then scored three 2-point shots and PBHS led, 21-13, with 6:30 left in the second quarter. Herington added a 2-pointer and Barnes answered with a 2-pointer. Another two from Herington was followed by a trey from Burnett. Herington added one more basket in the half but Barnes and Lewis each added buckets before the buzzer. PBHS led, 30-19, at halftime.

A Herington scoring streak in the third was interrupted briefly by a basket from Katy Benson. The Lady Warriors ended the quarter down one, 33-32.

McKenzie Ensminger got on the board first in the fourth but Herington answered with a two. Burnett added a trey but two free throws from Herington put the game even at 38. Lewis scored two baskets to get the four-point lead but a Herington 2-pointer cut the PBHS margin to a basket, 42-40. With .8 on the clock, a Herington inbound pass found a player underneath for the 2-point score for the 42-42 tie and sent the game into overtime.

A Herington two-point basket broke the tie in the extra period. Barnes again tied the game with a two. Herington jumped ahead 46-44 with a two but an Ensminger trey gave PBHS the 47-46 lead with 1:20 left on the clock. A steal by Larsen helped secure the game for the PBHS squad in the final 20 seconds of the contest. The Warriors earned the overtime win 47-46.

Burnett and Barnes led the Warriors in scoring with 14 points each. Lewis followed with nine points.

Moundridge

Larsen had the only basket for the PBHS squad in the first quarter. Moundridge scored eight points.

The Moundridge offense exploded in the second quarter with 22 points. Lewis and Larsen had two each for Peabody-Burns.

The Lady Warriors trailed, 30-6, at the half.

Offense slowed for the final two quarters of the contest. Barnes added four points in the half. Larsen, Lewis, and Burnett each added two. Moundridge added 19.

Larsen led the team in scoring with 6 points. Lewis and Barnes were second with four points.
