A last-second 3-point shot by Vince Newman earned the Peabody-Burns High School Warriors a victory Dec. 17 at Burrton Tuesday. The team came back from a 14-point halftime deficit, ultimately winning 57-56.
The PBHS offense scored 12 points in the first quarter, but Burrton had 19. Newman led the Warriors’ scoring with a 3-pointer and a 2-point basket. Braxton Kyle had three from the free-throw line. Xavier Jabary and Garret Schroeder each added 2.
The Warrior offense slowed in the second quarter. Kevin Baatrup got on the board with three, Kyle added two, Newman had one, and Burrton added 13. PBHS trailed 32-18 at the half.
The PBHS defense worked to keep the Chargers off the scoreboard in the third quarter, holding Burrton to 11. The Warriors won the offensive battle, adding 16. Kyle paced the team with 10, Schroeder had four, and Newman added two free throws.
PBHS chipped away at the margin with aggressive defense and outside shooting. With 9 seconds left in a two-point game, Burrton missed a critical free throw. PBHS rebounded and a pass found Newman on the outside beyond the arc. As the clock ran down, Newman drained a 3 to give the Warriors the 57-56 victory. Newman led the quarter with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Kyle and Schroeder added 4 each, while Baatrup and Jabary rounded out the scoring with two each.
Jabary led the team with 11 rebounds. Kyle followed with nine. Baatrup had five.

Girls still looking for first win
While the Lady Warriors showed improvement with better scoring, the squad is still looking for a win in 2013. They were defeated Dec. 17 on the road by Burrton 43-32.
Burrton had the advantage in the first quarter with 11 points. PBHS scored six, two each from Alex Lewis, Brianna Larsen and Jordan Gibson.
A slightly better second quarter closed the deficit to five, at 18-13. Both offenses added seven. Christa Elliott, Larsen and Gibson each scored two. Alex Lewis added a free throw.
The PBHS defense held Burrton to six in the third quarter. The Warriors could have made up some ground, but only scored on baskets from Alanis Bishop and Larsen, the team still trailed 24-17 at the end of three.
The PBHS offense had its best quarter in the fourth, scoring 13, but Burrton came up big with free throws, scoring 11 of 19 points from the line. Lewis led with six, Larsen followed with five, and Katy Benson added 4.
Larsen led the team with nine rebounds. Benson had seven.
