Staff writer
Peabody-Burns High School basketball teams came up short in makeup games Saturday at Centre. The boys lost, 63-56, and the girls lost, 55-19.
The boys’ game was a nail-biter. The Warriors led after three quarters but the lead changed several times. Centre led 29-28 at halftime.
Rocco Weerts made all of Peabody-Burns’ 14 points in the first quarter, and Philip scored nine of 14 points in the second quarter.
A rash of Centre turnovers early in the third quarter along with 3-point shots by Jack Parks and Young gave the Warriors a five-point lead.
The Cougars gradually ate into that lead and tied the game, 43-43. A last second shot by Young kept the Warriors out in front by two points.
Centre made nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take a 52-47 lead, but 3-point shots by Noal Reynolds and Young and two free throws by Young tied the game at 52-52.
In the final two minutes, the Warriors’ shooting turned cold while Centre scored six points, handing Peabody-Burns a seven-point loss.
Young led scoring with 23 points, followed by Weerts with 18. Other scorers were Reynolds, 8; Parks, 6; and Thomas Smith, 1.
Girls
Despite a vigorous defensive effort, the girls’ shooting was cold, and Centre led 17-8 after one quarter and 37-13 at halftime.
The Warriors made just six points in the second half but outscored Centre in the final quarter, 2-1.
Anna Eldridge made 10 points. Other scorers were Lexi Davis, 4; Sarah Spencer, 3; and Skylre Stucky, 2.
