Peabody-Burns High School seniors and forensic team members Jenipher Huls and Derek Schmidt advanced to the state 2A championship tournament May 7 at Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita.
The pair competed in improvised duet acting, which is a challenging acting competition comprised of two students who portray an original scene of two characters, a situation or conflict, and a solution to the conflict.
They were required to draw three characters, selecting two. They then drew three situations three settings, choosing one of each. They had 30 minutes to portray a scene, performing up to seven minutes.
Competitors were judged on completeness of the scene movement, tempo and rhythm, dialogue, acting, and dramatic effectiveness.
The pair placed first in the event at the Buhler Invitational in February, which qualified them for the state competition.
Jeniphur plans to attend Butler Community College. Derek plans to attend Pratt Community College.
