PBHS girls lose to Hope

A road loss to Hope finished the Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors basketball team’s regular schedule. The team was defeated 41-33. PBHS entered sub-state play on Monday.

Hope 41, PBHS 33

Brandee Burnett put up the first 2-point basket of the contest. Hope then scored 8 unanswered points before Rayna Barnes finished the quarter with a 2. PBHS trailed, 8-4, at the end of one quarter.

Sarah Hofkamp scored a 2 early in the second quarter to make the gap 2, 8-6, with 7 minutes, 18 seconds on the clock.

Hope then went to on a 10-point run before Burnett and Barnes teamed up for 4. Paige Lewis added a free throw, but Hope scored 4 and led, 20-11, at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, a Lions’ free throw was followed by a Tori Schroeder 2-point basket plus a bonus from the line. McKenzie Ensminger, Paige Lewis, and Schroeder teamed up for 8 points, but the Lady Warriors still trailed, 30-22, at the end of the third quarter.

A Barnes basket closed the margin to 6, 30-24, just seconds into the fourth quarter. Hope added 3 points, but Schroeder came back with a 2, and Burnett added 1 from the line. The Lions scored two free throws, but Barnes added a basket with less than three minutes to play in the contest.

A Hofkamp basket pulled the PBHS squad to within 5, 36-31, with two minutes left in the game, but that was as close as the Lady Warriors would get. Lewis added one more basket for the team. PBHS lost, 41-33.

Scoring

Barnes, 8; Schroeder, 7; Lewis, 7; Burnett, 5; Hofkamp, 4; and Ensminger, 2.

Olpe 70, PBHS 24

The team lost to Olpe Monday in the first round of substate competition in Cottonwood Falls, 70-24.

PBHS head coach Darren Schroeder said Olpe was the No. 2 ranked team in 2A.

The Lady Warriors end the season with a 5-15 record.
