Graduates receive thousands of dollars worth of scholarships and awards

Peabody-Burns High School class of 2010 joined the alumni ranks Sunday afternoon as 34 members of the senior class took part in a graduation ceremony in the Brown Gymnasium.
Scholars selected for Kansas Curriculum awards by the Kansas Board of Regents were Shelby Elliott, Martin Hofkamp, Sean Jones, Christopher Loucks, Denise Percival, Kaitlyn Preheim, Jacob Simmonds, Aaron Topham, Julie Wedel, and Traylee Woodruff.
Kansas State Scholars are selected by a formula that includes grade point average, ACT scores, and other scholastic information. Kansas State Scholars in the PBHS class of 2010 are Elliott, Loucks, Joshua Klarmann, and Aaron Topham.
The Kansas High School Activities Association Citizenship Awards went to Elliott and Isaac Burnett.
Class members, faculty, parents, and friends listened to graduation addresses by salutatorian Wedel and four co-valedictorians — Elliott, Klarmann, Simmonds, and Woodruff.
Members of the senior class were the recipients of more than $15,000 in awards from local scholarships.
Six Alumni Awards of $500 each were presented to Sean Jones, Brian O’Neal, Preheim, Danielle Savage, Topham, and Woodruff.
Three George E. Trimble Trust Fund Awards of $500 each were given to Elliott, Klarmann, and Loucks. The Letha Eberle Scholarship Fund Awards, also for $500 each, went to Hofkamp, Jones, O’Neal, Savage, Topham, and Wedel.
Awards of $500 each from the PHS Class of 1955 were given to Paige Barnes and Woodruff. Two Robert Phillips, Jr. Awards, at $300 each were given to Barnes and Loucks.
This year the Mary Josephine McCreary Memorial Award dispensed a total of $2,200 in scholarships to Burnett, Hofkamp, Preheim, and Simmonds.
Topham was awarded the Alumni Dance Award and Burnett was the recipient of the Sons of the American Legion George Holm Memorial Award.
The Burns Lions Club selected Loucks to receive its annual award.
FFA alumni organization give an annual award to a graduating senior, and additional awards to PBHS alums enrolled in college or vocational school. The 2010 recipient of the $500 award was Klarmann. The other awards (also for $500 each) went to Christopher Brooks, Bailey Clark, Duane Unruh, and Joe Zappone.
Woodruff was awarded the $125 Barrett Memorial Award, Simmonds was given the Peabody Masonic Award/Randy Farr Memorial Award for $175, and Burnett received the $225 Fred and Teresa Burdorf Award.
The Fitch Memorial Award for $300 was presented to Barnes and the Gladys Hart Memorial Award, also for $300, went to Elliott. Two Mabel Jensen Memorial Awards were given to Loucks and Wedel. Each award was for $350.
The Gephart Memorial Award was given for the final time. The remaining $300 of the award went to Klarmann.
Diplomas were presented and the PBHS class of 2010 was introduced to those in attendance.
