PBHS boys winless on the week

The first week of 2011 brought two losses for the PBHS Warriors. They were beaten by Centre on Jan. 4 at home, 51-37, and lost to Hope at Hope on Friday, 56-45.

Centre

Derek Price opened the scoring in the contest with a 2. Centre answered with a trey. Storm Pickens, Price, and Matt Hiebert each scored 2 and PBHS led, 8-3. Centre drained another trey and cut the Warrior advantage to 2, 8-6. Hunter Pickens added a trey and Centre answered with a 2. PBHS had the 3-point lead, 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Centre got as close as 1 in the second, but PBHS remained on top at the half, 23-17. Hiebert paced the team with 6. Jacob Gillet, Austin Savage, and Lucas Larsen each had 2.

Price had 3 points early in the third and the Warriors led, 26-18. Centre then went on a 13-point run to take the lead, 31-26. Pickens scored a 2 to cut the Cougar advantage to 3, 31-28. Centre answered with a 2 with 1:22 in the third. Savage ended the quarter with a trey that pulled the Warriors to within 2, 33-31.

Centre scored first in the fourth, but Hiebert answered with a 2. The Cougars added another 2 but Gillet came back with a 2. Two Cougar free throws made the Centre advantage 4 once more, but Brody Kyle cut the Centre lead in half. PBHS trailed again by 2, 39-37, with four and half minutes left in the game. Centre scored 12 more points in the game but PBHS went without a basket in the final minutes of the final quarter. PBHS lost, 51-37.

Hope

Matt Hiebert had the first 6 points for the Warriors with a trey, a 2-point basket, and a free throw. Hope answered with three 2-pointers and the game was tied at 6 with less than three minutes left in the first. Hope then scored a trey to take the 9-6 lead. Hiebert added another 2 and Storm Pickens got on the board with a 2, but Hope added 6. The 13-10 advantage went to Hope at the end of the quarter.

Seth Topham opened the second period with a 2-point basket, but Hope came back with a 2. Austin Savage tied the game, 15-15, with a trey, but Hope added two free throws. Storm Pickens also added 2 from the line and the game was tied at 17. A Hope free throw gave them the 1-point edge but Topham added a 2 to retake the PBHS lead, 19-18. Storm Pickens added 2 free throws and Hope answered with a 2-point basket. Hiebert had 2 from the line and Topham added a 2 and a free throw. Hiebert came up with a 2 at the buzzer and the Warriors had the 8-point edge at the half, 28-20. Several PBHS starters finished the half on the bench due to foul trouble.

The Warriors remained on top in the third despite the constant interruption of whistles. The Warriors added 11 and Hope added 12. The lead after three went to the Warriors, 39-32. Hiebert and Hunter Pickens each had 4. Storm Pickens added 2 points and Jacob Gillet had 1 point.

Hope added the first 4 points in the fourth. Brody Kyle had 2 for the PBHS Warriors with 7 minutes left in the contest. Hope then controlled the offense, scoring 10. Hope took the lead, 45-41, with four minutes left on the clock. Price added 3 more PBHS points and Hiebert tacked on a free throw. The final minutes of the contest were filled with free throws and several PBHS players fouled out. PBHS lost to Hope, 56-45.
