PBHS boys finish 5th in Marion Classic

The Peabody-Burns High School Warriors boys’ basketball team lost round one competition to Belle Plain, 50-33, in the Marion Classic. They also suffered a round two loss to Remington, 59-47. Round three favored the PBHS squad with a victory over Eureka, 53-28.

Belle Plaine

PBHS outscored Belle Plain 12-7 in the first quarter. Matt Hiebert had 5 points. Austin Savage had a trey. Seth Topham and Brody Kyle each had a basket.

While the 2-point edge went to the PBHS squad in the second quarter, offense was almost even. Christian Gard got on the board with 5 and Savage also had 5. Wesley Shaw added a free throw. Belle Plaine added 9 to the score. The Warriors had the 7 point edge at the half, 23-16.

Kyle had the only 2 points in a dismal offensive third quarter. Belle Plaine came back, scored 15 and took the 6-point lead, 31-25, at the end of three.

PBHS had 8 points in the fourth, 4 each from Topham and Savage. Belle Plain added 19, 13 from the free-throw line. PBHS lost round one, 50-33.

Savage, 8; Topham, 6; Gard, 5; Hiebert, 5; Pickens, 4; Kyle, 4; Shaw, 1.

Remington

Remington jumped out to a big first quarter lead, outscoring PBHS 19-10. Savage and Hunter Pickens each scored two baskets in the period. Hiebert added a basket also.

PBHS offense remained behind in the second quarter. Pickens had 4 points in the quarter. Savage, Hiebert and Shaw each had a basket, and Topham contributed a free throw. The Broncos put in 16. PBHS trailed, 35-21, at the half.

Both offenses added 16 in the third quarter. The gap remained 14, 51-37 at the end of three. Topham led the field with 6. Hiebert had 4. Pickens, Savage and Gard each added 2.

PBHS outscored Remington by 2 in the fourth, but the contest went to the Broncos. Hiebert paced the team with 5. Pickens added 4 and Shaw put in a free throw. PBHS was defeated in round two, 59-47.

Eureka

PBHS led, 10-7, at the end of one. Hiebert led the first quarter scoring with a trey and two baskets. Savage added a 2.

Warriors’ offense dominated the second quarter with 13 points. Savage led the field with 6. Gard added 4. Pickens had a basket and a free throw. PBHS held Eureka to 4 points. The Warriors had a 23-11 lead at the half.

PBHS remained in control in the second half, outscoring Eureka, 30-17. Gard paced the team with 6 in the final half. Hiebert added 5. Kyle had 4. Shaw, Topham, Savage, Garret Schroeder and Nick Preheim each added 2. PBHS won the round three consolation championship, 53-28.
