PBHS boys defeat Centre

The Peabody-Burns boys’ basketball team opened the Centre Classic with a win over the host team, 59-51, on Tuesday but lost in the next two rounds. On Friday, the Warriors were defeated by White City, 51-41. On Saturday, they were defeated by Solomon, 61-58. Up next, the junior varsity has a scheduled tournament at Goessel.

Centre

Both offenses opened fast in the first quarter. PBHS had the one-point edge, 12-11, at the end of the quarter. Garret Schroeder led with five points. Gard had a 3-pointer. Seth Topham and Hunter Pickens each added two points.

The PBHS defense went to work in the second quarter and held the Cougars to eight points. The Warriors scored 14. Gard led the team with five points in the quarter.

Topham had four points, Austin Savage added three points, and Schroeder had two. The Warriors led, 26-19, at halftime.

Centre tied the game, 35-35, late in the third quarter. With 1 minute, 23 seconds on the clock, the Cougars took a 36-35 lead. Braxton Kyle scored a trey from the top of the key to return the lead to the Warriors. A Centre foul sent Kyle to the line to shoot three free throws with no time on the clock. Kyle scored all three and PBHS led, 41-36, at the end of the quarter. Kyle led the period scoring with 8 points. Gard had a trey and Topham and Pickens each added two.

The Cougars scored 15 in the final period but PBHS scored 18 and hung on for the win. Savage had eight points. Kyle and Morris each added five.

Gard, Kyle, and Savage tied as the leading scorer for Peabody with 11 points. Topham had 10 points.

White City

White City exploded for 19 points in the first quarter. PBHS struggled, scoring only six. Gard, Morris, and Topham each had two.

Both offenses scored 12 in the second and the gap remained 13 at halftime. Kyle and Topham combined for eight points. Morris added three and Pickens recorded a free throw. White City led, 31-18, at the break.

Warrior offense had 10 points in the third quarter. White City scored 12. Pickens led the Warriors with six points. Topham and Morris each had a basket. PBHS trailed, 43-28, at the end of the period.

PBHS won the fourth quarter battle, 13-8, but lost the contest, 51-41. Pickens added 9 points in the period. Topham had four.

Pickens was the leading scorer for Peabody-Burns with 16 points. Topham had 12 and Morris had seven.

Solomon

The contest was tied, 11-11, after one quarter of play. Gard and Savage each had four. Kyle added three.

Solomon had the slight edge in the second quarter. Pickens had four for the PBHS squad. Kyle and Topham each had three points. Morris recorded a free throw. PBHS trailed by one at halftime, 23-22.

Solomon offense outscored PBHS in the third, 20-15. Gard led the team with five points. Topham and Schroeder each had four. Savage added two. With one quarter left in the contest, Solomon led PBHS, 43-37.

Even though the Warriors scored 21 points, they were still two baskets short at the buzzer. Gard and Savage each had five points. Morris added a trey. Kyle, Topham, and Schroeder each scored two. PBHS lost, 61-58.

Gard led the Warriors in scoring with 14 points. Savage had 11 points. Topham had 9. Kyle had 8.
