Opal Craney
Opal (Meyer) Craney, formerly of Peabody, passed away Aug. 20, at Homestead Assisted Living in Manhattan at the age of 104.
Opal was born in Inman, in the home of her parents, Arthur and Rachel (Brady) Meyer on Jan. 3, 1915. She moved with her family to Hesston when she was five years old. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Hesston.
She graduated from high school from The Mennonite Academy in Hesston in 1933. She loved to sing in the choir at church and school choirs. She loved to play tennis, basketball, and softball.
After graduating from high school, she went to Wichita to work as a nanny. Then she moved to Newton, where she worked at Young’s Lunch and Graber Hardware. That is where she met the love of her life, Ellis Craney. They were married Dec. 30, 1945.
Opal then became a farm wife, where she helped Ellis on the farm by driving a big truck hauling many loads of wheat, milo, corn, and soybeans to the elevator. She helped with many farm chores and always cooked the best meals for farm workers and her family. Opal was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Sorosis Club, the United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women. She sang in the church choir for many years.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Sally Ammeter; three grandchildren: Robert Ammeter and wife Christine, Amy Drake and husband Douglas, and Angela Bunger and husband Chad; six great-grandchildren: Samantha, Alison, and Jacob Ammeter, Daniel Drake, and Mitchell and Collin Bunger; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ellis, in 1999 after 54 years of marriage, son-in-law Myron Ammeter, and brother Albert Meyer and his wife, Ruth.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with the Reverend Melanie Nord officiating. Graveside services were 2:30 p.m. Monday at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.
The family received friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, prior to services.
