SHERIFF

Aggravated armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

A 74-year-old rural Hillsboro man suffered injuries described as minor when he was robbed at 4:30 a.m. Thursday of his wedding band, valued at $200, by an armed acquaintance who broke into the victim’s farmhouse near 210th and Kanza Rds.

Deputy Steven Janzen’s report said the perpetrator was suspected of using both drugs and alcohol at the time.

The victim was identified as Freddie D. Allnutt.

Derrick R. LaPlante, 38, Hillsboro, was arrested more than 12 hours later by Hillsboro police and jailed on suspicion of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, and two counts of aggravated assault.

LaPlante, previously jailed in 2018 on suspicion of attempted battery, was being held in county jail in lieu of $200,000 bond.

According to monitored transmissions, he was identified by the victim of a Hillsboro incident that occurred minutes before the robbery.

In the related Hillsboro incident, Randall Decker, 66, suffered facial injuries and was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance after he reported being threatened with a knife and punched in the face multiple times at 4:20 a.m. Thursday by an acquaintance who knocked on his door and was allowed into his residence in the 100 block of N. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro.

According to monitored transmissions, ambulance attendants treating Decker, who had identified his alleged attacker, relayed to police that Decker had received a call from as Freddie D. Allnutt’s residence indicating that the suspect had showed up there.

Hillsboro police helped sheriff’s deputies investigate that case.

At 5:15 p.m., Hillsboro police located LaPlante at his residence and took him into custody.
