In order to be nominated at the primary, the write in candidates must receive votes from at least 5 percent of all registered voters in the district or about 136 votes.
A blank line will be on the primary in November if no one receives the votes in August. It then goes to the person with the most votes.
“For both the general election and primary there will be a chance for residents to write in a candidate,” Spencer said.
Spencer said this is the first time she’s experienced an open position like this.
District 1 County Commissioner Roger Fleming said Thursday he did not plan to file for re-election.
“I’ve learned a lot but because of personal things in my life I feel like someone else might be a better fit for the position,” he said. “At this time running is not in my best interest.”
