New schedule
for commodities
Staff writer
After a brief hiatus, free food distribution will resume in September at 10 Marion County locations.
Bimonthly U.S. Department of Agriculture commodities will follow a new schedule. Distributions for residents of Marion, previously at the senior center on the third Wednesday of even-numbered months, now will be the third Thursday of odd-numbered months at Marion County Food Bank.
Commodities are distributed first-come, first-served. Recipients need not apply but must meet income guidelines. A household’s monthly income cannot exceed $2,461 plus $876 for each household member after the first.
Distributions typically include staples such as canned fruits and vegetables, dried beans, peanut butter, crackers, and canned or frozen meat, chicken, or fish.
“We’ve got enough resources here that nobody should go hungry,” said Lu Turk, director of Marion County Department on Aging.
The next distributions will take place in November and January.
