New immunizations coming to county
Those allergic to regular flu shots could now have a flu vaccine to help them ward off the illness.
A three-component flu vaccine and a vaccine against shingles are coming soon to the county health department.
The flu vaccine, Flublok, is safe for people with egg allergies and made without flu virus. It also can be produced more quickly than traditional flu vaccinations made using eggs.
Flublok is recommended for adults, not children.
“Flublok will be offered at our flu clinics for those that are indicated,” health department administrator Diedre Serene said. “Flu clinics will be scheduled starting the second week of September.”
Shingrix, a vaccine against shingles and its complication, post-herpetic neuralgia, is recommended for healthy adults 50 and older. It is given in two doses two to six months apart.
“Shingrix will be offered when we receive the product,” Serene said. “An order has been placed, and we will take names and phone numbers and schedule individuals when we receive the product.”
