New heated dock on horizon at lake

A heated fishing dock should soon stand again at Marion County Lake.

Lake superintendent Isaac Hett told county commissioners Monday that the contractor hired to rebuild a heated boat dock after the original one was destroyed in a storm last July now has the framework done and is waiting for flotation devices to arrive.

“As soon as he gets them, he can come and work to get the dock completed,” Hett said.

The work is being done by Ben’s Boat Docks in Kechi. The company in December bid $203,900 to build a new dock with a 25-year warranty and demolish the old one.

Hett also said organizers of the lake’s annual Bluegrass Festival are considering rescheduling the event for July 31 and Aug. 1.

“That’s not 100%,” Hett said.

That date would coincide with another bluegrass festival elsewhere, and with Washunga Days at Council Grove.

Organizers are also considering keeping the bluegrass festival on the last weekend of July in future years.
