Motorcycle race approved

Staff writer

County commissioners and Florence city council members voted Monday to approve the 2023 Florence Grand Prix motorcycle race May 28.

Planning and zoning coordinator Sharon Omstead told commissioners the county’s planning board had given its approval to use portions of county property and close roads.

Florence city council followed up later in the day, approving the race with some details to be worked out later.

Bruce Skiles, president of Bent Rims Motorcycle Club, and Tobe Moore, vice president, told commissioners this year’s race would have hour-long races in eight different classes limited to 200 entrants, plus a 100-mile race in nine classes for modern motorcycles.

The group has gathered private landowners’ authorization for areas where the race course will cross private property.

Skiles said volunteers were working on cleaning and preparing race courses.

In other business Monday, commissioners approved allowing McPherson Rural Water District No. 2 to do work on county property. The district serves customers in a portion of Marion County.

Deanne Nelson, spokeswoman for SafeHope, told commissioners 80 residents of Marion County were served over the past year and read a proclamation of Sexual Violence Awareness Month, which commissioners signed.
