On Monday, June 16, Marion’s oldest citizen, Sidney Holder, reaches the proud age of 100 years. He looks back over a century that had its beginnings back in slave days, service with the Confederate Army during the Civil War, freighting on the Old Murfreesboro Turnpike, and a realization of his dream when he came out to Kansas in 1883 and settled in Marion Centre.

Four boys, nominated from the junior class by the faculty of Marion High School, are attending Boys State this week at Wichita. They are Don Van Buren, Forrest Kelsey, Warren Hayen, and Dean Waddell.

The newly organized American Legion Post, the Moffitt-Crandall Post 372 of Tampa, will have its installation ceremony June 16 at Tampa Rural High School. The new post was named for the late Dr. James Moffitt, who served with the American Expeditionary Force during World War I and Arthur Crandall, who was killed in action in Dutch New Guinea.

Mrs. Arnold Schwemmer entertained a number of little folks and their mothers at a party June 7 to celebrate Jerry’s fourth birthday. Those there were Jerry, Gailen Broadstreet, Dennis Schroeder, Larry and Gary Knackstedt, Robbie and Sheryl Ecker, Max Jackson Jr., Donnie Holmer, Judy Dramer, Michael Schwemmer, Mrs. Bob Ecker, Mrs. Don Holmer, Mrs. Max Jackson, and Mrs. E.M. Dramer.

Janice Meisner, Sarabel Wolf, Vicki Barrett, Juanita Jo Ford, Patricia Henry, Jeaneen Brose, and Vicki Black went Monday to Camp Wood at Elmdale for a 10-day camp period.

Births announced in this issue include Michael Bruce, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Junior Hett, born June 10; Robert Gene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stinchcomb of Lincolnville, born June 8; and Margaret Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Weber, born June 10.

Three girls from the 1947 graduation class of Marion High School are attended Kansas State Teachers College during the summer session to prepare for teaching positions. They are Wanda Ireland, Juanita Gutsch, and Anita Seifert.
