Dr. Leslie L. Saylor, prominent Topeka surgeon and a former coach and teacher at Marion High School, will headline the afternoon program on Old Settlers Day, October 1. Dr. Saylor is the son of the late beloved Dr. J.H. Saylor, who for years was the Marion County health officer.

A serious and costly case of destructive vandalism was discovered this week in a field of heavy hybrid forage sorghum belonging to John DeForest and located along US-77 and the Cottonwood River just northwest of Florence. Six pieces of heavy steel and cast iron had purposely been placed in the field and caused damage to harvesting equipment.

Fred “Fritz” Koch, road supervisor for the Marion County Highway Department, has accepted a long-standing offer of a similar position with the Lyon County department in Emporia. Koch has been county supervisor with Marion County for the past 12 years.

Harry Linn, Marion, missed $150 at this week’s Cash Days drawing. There were no other winners.

Three Marion High School girls Barbara Bailey, Monica Klein, and Jeanne Keazer and their sponsor Pat Jackson attended the Leadership Training Clinic for physical education for high school girls September 9, 10, and 11 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Homer Stenzel of Schoneman Shoe Store has awarded two local children prizes as winners in a Poll Parrot “Sur-Prize” contest. Chris Costello, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Costello, Marion, received a brand new deluxe boys bicycle and Dan Ludwig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Ludwig, Florence, received an UNCLE gun.
