More than 1,000 pupils were in attendance Saturday for Maude Thompson Day in Marion, and the teacher was overwhelmed. Thompson, who has taught for 44 years in the Marion school system, summed up the turnout by asking, “How can I not love you?”
An essay on the front page honors Mothers Day and is complete with pictures of Neva Smith and her 2-week-old daughter, Steffanie Dawn, and Della Suffield with Stephanie Summerville, her great-great-granddaughter.
Social events printed this week include two bridal showers. Norma Kline, Barbara Abbott, Shirley Carlson, Mary Smith, Suzanne Thole, Mary Ann Wiens, and Sylvia Helmer were hosts at a come-and-go shower for Karen Klein, bride-elect of Mike Regier. Hosts for a miscellaneous shower complimenting Ann Bryant, fiancée of Pat Carr, were Pauline Edmunds, Shirley Jo Hett, Mary Longhofer, Phyllis Melton, and Margaret Wilson.
Marilee McGinness, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed McGinness of Marion, graduated Sunday from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine with a doctor of medicine degree. She is a 1972 graduate of Marion High School.
Marion residents were a little perplexed two weeks ago when a daring young man hovered 80 feet over the city in an ultra-light flying machine. Mike Fruechting says he has flown the craft sparingly since he bought it two months ago.
