Kenneth Schmidt of Marion is pictured as he receives a Donahue Corporation Award from Tom Donahue for driving one million miles without a major accident. Since he began with the firm in March 1873, Schmidt has driven 1,013,763 miles. He attributes his good driving record to luck and experience.

Mayor Peggy Blackman had the pleasant task of judging the creative cookie contest in which girls from Girl Scout Troop 66 competed to receive “Creative Cooking” patches. Troop members are Marsha Gooding, Kelly Enos, April Ogden, Tonya Johnson, Amy White, and Brenda Smith. Marsha Gooding was winner of the contest.

Stan Wood, a native of Chase County and the brother of Marionites Pauline Ferrell and Earl Wood, has been named chairman of the Marion Municipal Airport board.

Representatives to the 1982 session of American Legion Girls’ State are Cindy Heerey and Lisa Richmond of Marion and Linda Robinson of Florence who will represent Tampa. Alternates for Marion will be Brenda Ellis of Florence and Amy Hett, Marion. Kathy Hayes, Florence, will be the Tampa alternate.

The Lady Warriors 37-50 loss Monday night to Minneapolis marked the end of the line for Jami Shirley who at 5’5” now holds the school record as the highest career scorer. Shirley topped the record of 1,026 points set by Greg Boyle last year.

This year’s Marion County Extension Beef Tour will begin Monday at the Bob Unruh ranch south of Durham. After lunch at the Durham City Building it will go to the Scully Ranch, four miles west of Durham, then to the Glen Klinkerman ranch three miles west. The last stop will be at the White Chapparel Ranch, owned and operated by Dennis White.
