Marion County commissioners formally moved to accept a lease-purchase agreement with Central National Bank that will allow the county to acquire the Bowron Building, formerly home of First Federal Savings in Marion. The bank will finance the lease-purchase and will pay up to $25,000 for remodeling and repairs.

Marion High School classes planning reunions on Old Settlers Day include the 10-year reunion of the Class of 1983, 45th anniversary of the Class of 1948, and golden anniversary of the Class of 1943.

Three students from Marion County — Ashley Loomis of Marion, Jeremy Johnson of Hillsboro, and Leyla Strotkamp of Peabody — have been named Summerfield and Watkins-Berger scholars at the University of Kansas.

Tom Grosse, owner and operator of Grosse Construction and Marion County Landfill, died Friday when a bridge he was working on near Sedgwick collapsed. Grosse was operating a backhoe removing part of the bridge deck when the deck collapsed. Harold Richmond of Peabody, who was working with Grosse on the project, was injured.

Despite a 27-6 defeat at Eureka, Marion High School coach Grant Thierolf is confident his team will improve.
