Marion city commissioners voted Monday to proceed with a grant application to help fund a proposed physical fitness center, but the price of the project could amount to almost $2 million and left them concerned about long-term costs.

Iris Shanklin was selected student of the month for May by members of the Marion High School faculty. Her parents are Nancy and Craig Shanklin of Florence.

As reported in the Sunday edition of the Wichita Eagle, Marion County Lake has produced its second state-record fish. A 4 pound 9 ounce white crappie was hauled in May 10 by 8-year-old Lindsey Smith, Wichita.

Cyndi Woerz graduated May 17 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine with a doctor of medicine degree. Woerz plans to pursue a residency in pediatrics in Greenville, South Carolina. Her parents are Harold and Norma Jean Woerz of Marion.

John Wheeler tied a meet Class 2A record at the state track and field championships Saturday in Wichita with a discus throw of 166 feet 5 inches. Wheeler also holds the school record of 172 feet 6 inches. Marion’s 3,200-meter relay team of Sam Petersen, Thurston Thies, Marty Teufel, and Jim McLain finished first with a time of 8:19.02.

Teka Marie Pardue, born May 18, and William Alex Case, born May 29, are St. Luke Hospital’s
“Beary Special Babies” for the month of May.
