The morning dawned crisp and clear, and the welcome flags and Old Glory were fluttering in a gentle breeze Saturday to greet the 10,000 people gathered in Marion for the 85th annual Old Settlers’ Day celebration.

The MHS junior class placed first in the class float category. It featured a covered wagon pulled by four strong boys with girls walking in pioneer dress.

City co-foreman Merle Bruner, who has been an employee for the past 12 years, turned in his resignation which will be effective Jan. 1, 1997. Bruner said he would like to remain as chief of the fire department.

Fall homecoming ceremonies will be held Friday when the undefeated Centre Cougars take on Wakefield. Queen candidates are Emily Belton, Nikki Bina, Michelle Hajek, and Wendy Rudolph. King candidates are Andre Ebaben, Josh Plett, Martin Skytte, and Mike Webb.

Four generations of the Bud McLinden family rode on horseback in the Old Settlers’ Day parade. They are great-grandpa Bud, father Chuck holding one-year-old Lauren, and grandpa Dick.

Lauren also is a fourth generation member of the Ray Longhofer family attending the parade including Ray and Pat Longhofer, Patti McLinden, and Chuck McLinden.

Danny Maddox has opened Marion Computers at 111 N. Fourth in downtown Marion. He will sell both new and used computers, printers, and other equipment as well as parts, accessories, and software.
