Marion County Extension agent Steve Tonn was honored this week by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents when he received the association’s distinguished service award at its national meeting at Nashville, Tennessee.

A front page picture shows Sunflower Building workers guiding the hydraulic ram which will power the elevator being installed in Marion County Courthouse. Instead of pulleys and cables, the elevator cab will be raised and lowered on the shaft.

“Beary Special Babies” born at St. Luke Hospital during the month of August include Dirk Edward Young born Aug. 10; Conner Lane Montgomery born Aug. 11; Madison Kay Richert, Aug. 13; Zachary Lane Wiebe, Aug. 17; and Kaleb James Montgomery, Aug. 29.

About 30 players are out for Marion High School football this season, led by seniors Jeremy May, Chris Bowers, Shawn Markley, and Nick Thornbro. The Warriors will be tested in the first game of the season Friday, when they host Southeast of Saline.

An Aviation Fun Day will be held Sept. 14 at Marion Airport. Pilots will compete in activities that include a bombing contest using sacks of flour as bombs, balloon bursting contest with planes attempting to burst floating balloons with propellers, and a spot landing contest. Airplane rides will be offered for a nominal donation with free rides for kids. There also will be a static display of airplanes, some unique.
