Marion County as a whole may escape the dreadful predictions of a poor wheat harvest, if preliminary cuttings are any indication.

A winter of dismal expectations has turned into a pleasant surprise with preliminary cuttings producing high yields.

Harvest will be in full swing this week and experts say high wheat prices should make this a profitable year for farmers who produce the crop.

Voters in Marion Unified School District approved raising funds through a local option budget increase by a vote of 430-388. But the vote to acquire a new junior high building through lease-purchase agreement tied 411-411.

Two provisional ballots were cast which have not been opened or counted because of a residency question. They will be opened after a recommendation is received from Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh.

Marion Kiwanis Club members have selected the theme, “175 Years on the Santa Fe Trail,” as the official theme for this year’s Old Settlers’ Day.

Aulne United Methodist Church will hold its annual Independence Day celebration July 3. The event will feature a barbecue supper, ice cream social, music by the “Anything Goes” band, and fireworks at dusk.

Andrea Wegerer, daughter of Judy and Lou Wegerer of Marion, has returned from Level II of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, Hutchinson.

The program included a trip to Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, where campers had the opportunity to meet astronaut Joe Engle, train on simulators, and visit Mission Control headquarters.
