The first Marion County Textile Trunk Show in Marion Saturday and Sunday was deemed a success by organizers Jeanine Thomas, Jan Davis, and Marion County Economic Director Teresa Huffman.

At least 17 vendors had displays and many are planning to return next year. Several offered to help with organizing and marketing the 2012 event.

4-H’er Cassidy Hill, rural Marion, and her dog, Cheyenne, won purple ribbons Saturday and Sunday at the Johnson County Dog Show at the American Royal Building in Kansas City. Cheyenne won purple ribbons in the Intermediate Showmanship category Saturday and Agility I off-lead Sunday.

Marion County high school students are taking the stage this month for a variety of plays and musicals. This weekend includes “Cinderella” at Marion, “Hello Dolly” at Peabody-Burns, and “The Three Musketeers” at Goessel. Hillsboro will present “Once Upon a Mattress” next weekend, and the Tuesday after that, Centre will perform “Fools.”

Whitney Gordon, Marion High School senior, was among eight volleyball players named Saturday to the all-league first team volleyball team. Gordon was the only MHS volleyball player to receive all-league honors.

An article by staff writer Ben Kleine features 90-year-old Leo Scharenberg, formerly of Cedar Point, now living at Parkside Homes, Hillsboro, who at the age of 21 was part of three invasions in Europe, two in Italy, and one in France. He earned four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his service, including five months of captivity in a German POW camp.

Josh Wesner, pastor of Emanuel Baptist Church in Marion recently fulfilled requirements for ordination by the North American Baptist Conference and will be ordained Nov. 20 at the church, 229 Walnut Street. A reception will follow.
