The labor situation in the oil fields and the floating population which is coming into Florence is making the sheriff’s office and the county attorney a lot of trouble. Sheriff Armstrong, County Attorney Wheeler, Marshal Eichenberger of Florence and several deputies rounded up a number of offenders Sunday and they are now in the county jail with trial set for today, on a charge of disturbing the peace.

The State Bank of Commerce has just installed an electric Burroughs Tabulating machine for the bookkeeping department and began the first of the year with the new system of bookkeeping. It is a new machine just out, and seems to be very complete.

Pete Magathan brought us a piece of watermelon the other day. Watermelon on the first of the year—did you ever hear of it before?

The Women’s Auxiliary unit of the Claude Newlee Post in Chase County has been named the Lucy McLinden Unit in honor of Lucy McLinden, the only Chase county girl to lose her life in service for her country during the war. Miss McLinden spent her high school days here and this honor to her memory will be appreciated by her host of friends here.

One small boy thinks there was a slip somewhere in the planning of his Christmas presents. He received a knife and an Eversharp pencil.

Sheriff-elect Hannaman has appointed as his deputy Mr. Louis Richter of Hillsboro. Mr. Richter is quite well known over the county, having taught in the county schools several years ago. He was in the army during the war and since has been writing life insurance. Mr. and Mrs. Richter will make their home in Marion.

The farmers in the Wren neighborhood have been making a great improvement in the road between Wren and town. They have worked two half days on them with several teams and road drags and it is getting them in good traveling order.

There will be a minstrel concert at the I.O.O.F. hall Jan. 14. A most wonderful orchestra under the leadership of Rufus Rastus Washington Parfor Lee will furnish music for the evening.
