Memorial Day services planned at area cemeteries

Several area cemeteries are planning Memorial Day observances this year.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro will observe Memorial Day with a 10 a.m. ceremony at Memorial Park. The speaker will be Marri Krupco, commander, Department of Kansas American Legion.

Names of deceased veterans will be read.

A steak dinner at the American Legion Post No. 366 hall will follow the ceremony.

Tickets are available in advance at $17 by contacting the American Legion Hall at (620) 947-3624 or Hillsboro Hardware at (620) 947-2575.

Marion

Marion’s observation of Memorial Day will be a 10 a.m. service at the cemetery with a speaker and a gun salute. Names of veterans will be read.

After the ceremony, Marion Kiwanis will serve donuts in the multipurpose room at Marion Elementary.

Volunteers are needed to help with the Avenue of Flags at the cemetery. They can meet at the cemetery at 9 a.m. May 29.

Memorial Day service Monday at 10 a.m. there will be a speaker.

Kiwanis will serve donuts in multipurpose room at the elementary school. Flags will be removed at 4 p.m. Monday.

Cedar Point, Florence

The John McCay American Legion Post No. 308 firing squad will honor the dead at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Cavalry Cemetery, 10 a.m. at Cedar Point, and 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery. There will be no speakers.

Benny Holtzclaw will speak at both Florence and Cedar Point.

Peabody

Memorial Day services will be at 10:45 a.m. at Prairie Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Nathan Gift will officiate and the high school band will play.

Pilsen

Memorial Day services will be at 9:30 a.m. at Pilsen Cemetery.

The service will include military honors by Gilbert-Popp Post No. 347 of American Legion, Lincolnville.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be at Pilsen Community Center.

No Memorial Day observance will be held at Ramona this year.

Details for services at Burdick, Lincolnville, and Lost Springs were not available at press time.
