Medicare session coming to Marion

If you or a loved one has thought about applying for Medicare, an information session soon will come to Marion.
Through the Kansas State Extension Office, Rodney Denholm will answer questions and provide information from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at Marion’s Chisholm Trail Extension District office at 1116 E Main St. Marion County Department of Aging Director Luretta Turk also will speak.
Denholm is the extension office’s family resource management agent as well as a senior health insurance councilor for the state.
Marion hasn’t had a recent Medicare basics class, Denholm said, which is a reason for the session. This will be his first time running a session like this.
“The main reason is I have, probably on a weekly basis, people calling or stopping by with questions about Medicare,” he said. “I thought, well let’s try to just offer a workshop for the community and for anyone to come in.”
He said questions usually range from when a person can apply for Medicare to what it covers.
Part of what Denholm does is help people during an open enrollment period, typically from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, as well as helping with their prescription drug plans.
“A natural part of that is getting involved with Medicare,” Denholm said.
During the upcoming information session, Denholm will explain what Medicare covers and doesn’t cover, costs involved, and how supplemental insurance policies work.
“People stop by and have questions about Medicare Advantage plans,” he said. “So, we’ll have information about that, too.”
