Maurine Graham

Retired music teacher and Marion native Maurine Alice Graham, 97, Winfield, died Thursday.

Born May 4, 1919, to Emory and Hazel (Logan) Hawbecker in Marion, she graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in 1941 and did post-graduate work in Chicago and Greeley, Colorado.

She taught vocal and instrumental music in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and in Atwood, Centralia, Marion, and Winfield. She married Howard Sloan in 1951 and became a private music teacher.

The Sloans were married 44 years; after his death, she married Stanley Graham, who also preceded her in death.

Survivors include stepdaughters Sharon Torbet of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Kate London of Austin, Texas; stepson Stanley Graham Jr. of Austin, Texas; sister Jacque Larson of California; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Graham’s body was donated to KU Medical Center. No services are scheduled.
